Jonathan Byrd and the Pickup Cowboy with Corin Raymond – Contemporary Folk/Bluegrass

Friday, December 1, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

“…a folk singer with the heart of a rock ‘n’ roll band.” — K. Oliver, Free Times

Jonathan Byrd is a preacher’s son, a Gulf War veteran, and an award-winning songwriter from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, known for literary, outsider songs that have become campfire favorites. The Chicago Tribune called Byrd “one of the top 50 songwriters of the past 50 years.”

Multi-instrumentalist Johnny Waken cut his teeth on electric guitar in Pittsburgh with rock legend Norm Nardini, opening for The Blues Brothers Band on their Red, Hot & Blue tour in 1992. On stage and after hours, he jammed with members of Bon Jovi and the legendary Steve Cropper. At the age of 24, Waken left music to pursue primitive skills and through-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2000 with an eleven-pound pack. Returning to music years later Johnny joined theatre troupe Paperhand Puppet Intervention, contributing to scores for nine shows and winning 4 Indy Awards for best original music.

Jonathan Byrd and The Pickup Cowboy are musical gunslingers, vaudevillian hucksters, and old-fashioned tent revivalists. Between heartbreaking ballads and hell-raising sing-alongs, the Cowboys entertain and get audiences involved in the show.

“Jonathan Byrd doesn’t sing songs; he sings truth.” — Mare Wakefield, Performing Songwriter

“Jonathan Byrd swings from the roots of American music…He jumps between gutbucket blues and tender ballads, empathetic work laments and sympathetic character studies…Byrd shares the often-missed, always poignant tales of the small people that make this world such a big place.” — Grayson Currin, The Independent

Jonathan will be joined by Corin Raymond and bass player Kyshona Armstrong

Toronto songwriter Corin Raymond is a troubadour whose robust veracity appeals to older folks and children alike. Raymond’s songs are covered by Dustin Bentall, The Good Lovelies, The Strumbellas, The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer, and a far flung community of roots musicians and enthusiasts. Raymond’s latest JUNO nominated album, Hobo Jungle Fever Dreams (released March 3rd, 2016) is “a hypnotic, literate collection of dark tall tales…. Romantic, immediate, and narcotic.” (Acoustic Guitar). Aside from the hilarious triumph of funding his previous project, double-album Paper Nickels, with Canadian Tire money, Raymond enjoys a second career performing his non-musical, one-man shows Bookworm (2011) and The Great Canadian Tire Money Caper (2014), which he has toured extensively to over a dozen Fringe and literary festivals, and to theatres in three countries. “Raymond has impeccable timing, and his performance is at once intimate, openhearted, and evangelical.” (The Georgia Straight on Bookworm) “Corin Raymond is a storyteller who by the end of the night you’ll have known your whole life.” (The Globe and Mail).  Corin’s website

Poetry reading prior to the Concert

Dec 1, 3:30 p.m. Bedford Room of Bedford Central Library

A reading from “You’ve Changed,” Jonathan Byrd’s first and newly published book of poetry. Please join us!

“You’ve Changed, a collection of masterful poems by Jonathan Byrd, leaves me with hope. Takes me through darkness, past sorrow, to the other side of despair, past the losses, the crosses, beyond surrender. Offers a glimpse of the star field where there are no more words. Just the gentle glow of eternity. Hope. What more could I ask of a collection of poems?”

— Mary Gauthier

You’ve Changed is a collection of poetry that was born over seven years of working on a novel. I may work on the novel for another seven years or another seventy.

To maintain a sense of wonder and play in this disciplined writing environment, I created exercises for myself. I removed time. I introduced two characters from different books. I told a modern story using only words from Genesis. Mostly they were weird little monsters I shared with my friends on the internet. But some were very moving. Some made me cry or laugh out loud. Some still do, even just now proofreading the latest version. Somehow my heart got into it.

You’ve Changed is a seven-year journey of inches. I didn’t even know I was making a book and now you may be holding it. Thanks for reading.
